Themes and Goals

International standards are described in technical specifications. The standards development organizations below have published or are developing specifications for interoperability of AR components and portability of data, as well as for supporting technologies and ensuring end user safety.

Standards are only valuable for reducing obstacles to industry growth when they are widely adopted. Unfortunately, there are barriers to adoption. For example, the gap between a written specification ratified by the membership of an international standards body and an implementation that complies with the standard can be very large.

This workshop permits participants to explore the practical benefits of interoperability through experimentation. Participants will have the option of either using their data sets, or those provided as part of the workshop materials. Test suites and tools for compatibility and/or compliance with two or more international standards, and an open source AR Cloud environment will provided by the workshop leaders. Depending on participants’ goals and implementations, there may also be the opportunity to test compliance and interoperability between platforms (a “plug-fest”).

By participating in this workshop, ISMAR attendees will learn the steps to follow when implementing and testing compliance with international AR interoperability standards, and obtain hands-on experience with implementations through example projects and sample code.

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be prepared to apply interoperability principles within current and future AR projects and integrate their innovations with existing AR systems or IT infrastructure.
